On Tuesday, Maryland made history as the first state in the nation to pass marriage equality through a referendum vote. The victory – followed by a similar one in Maine the same day – marks a major civil rights milestone, as marriage equality advocates had previously lost 32 straight referendum votes.
After the election results came in, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley tweeted “A message to Maryland’s kids: whether your parents happen to be gay or straight, your families are equal under law.”
The victory is largely attributable to activists in Maryland, who involved Republicans, Roman Catholics, African American church leaders and labor unions in the campaign.
Staff at Campaign Consultation, Inc. took part in advocacy activities for marriage equality over the past year; mobilizing for Annapolis Lobby Day, working the polls on November 8th, and leading a ‘4Q6’ social media campaign.
