FIFA says Headscarves are Unsafe. Iran is Crying Foul

Last month the Iranian women’s soccer team was barred from playing in a key match to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.  Their uniform of long-sleeves, long pants and headscarf, which is in-line with the players’ Muslim tradition, did not meet FIFA’s uniform regulations.  FIFA has defended the disqualification saying the Iranian team’s headscarves are a choking hazard.  The regulations could not only affect the Iranian women’s team but could disqualify additional Muslim players wearing headscarves on other teams.
