The State of Marriage Equality

The fight for marriage equality continues across the U.S. On Tuesday, voters in North Carolina approved a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, which will prevent courts or future legislatures from validating marriage equality. The ban goes as far as to outlaw civil unions in the state.

This measure has spurred opposition from advocacy groups as well as the President. Barak Obama formally announced on Wednesday that he is in support of same-sex marriage. Marylanders Advocate for Marriage Equality

On February 13th, more than five hundred advocates from across the state of Maryland joined in front of the State House in Annapolis to lobby for passage of Senate Bill 241 and House Bill 438, which would ensure marriage equality. Governor Martin O’Malley spoke eloquently about the legalization of marriage for same-sex couples, making history as the first sitting Maryland governor to appear at a pro-LGBT Lobby Day rally. Chants of “O’Mal-ly, O’Mal-ly” resonated throughout the square as he took the stand.
