Tagging Students in Texas

Northside Independent School District in Texas plans to use Radio Frequency Identification System (RFIS) tags implanted in their students’ identification cards to track student locations next year. The goal of this program, according to district officials, is to increase student safety by allowing officials to monitor student locations and increase the accuracy of student attendance tracking. If this program is successful, the district could receive an additional $1.7 million next year in funding from both higher attendance and Medicaid reimbursements for busing special education students.
